Czech Telecom today announced that it has started providing international telecommunications services to its business and service provider customers using dense wavelength division multiplexing See WDM.  (DWDM) optical solutions from Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU).

Czech Telecom and Lucent have constructed an international optical network, with access points in the Slovak Republic, Austria and Germany.

Czech Telecom is using the state-of-the-art optical infrastructure technology to offer high-quality high-speed connections between locations in the Czech Republic Czech Republic, Czech Česká Republika (2005 est. pop. 10,241,000), republic, 29,677 sq mi (78,864 sq km), central Europe. It is bordered by Slovakia on the east, Austria on the south, Germany on the west, and Poland on the north.  and abroad, and also transit services to several countries. The technology will provide Czech Telecom's customers with network administration and operations services 24 hours a day, all year round.

The system offers up to 160 10-Gb/s wavelengths for a total capacity of 1.6 Tb/s on one fiber, and open architecture that enables it to operate in multi-vendor environments. The companies completed the construction of points of presence in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, Vienna, Austria and Frankfurt, Germany in January 2003. The second phase will consist of constructing similar Points of presence in Budapest and Warsaw.
