Cyveillance Study Reveals Only 18% of e-Travel, Brokerages, Electronics Sites e-Commerce Enabled.

ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1999--

A study released today by Cyveillance, a leading provider of e-Business Intelligence, revealed that only 18% of travel, brokerage and electronics sites--three of the fastest growing industries on the Web--are fully e-Commerce enabled.

Additionally, nearly half of the sites studied are currently generating revenue through advertising rather than e-Commerce, as popular assumption would suggest.

Cyveillance estimates that the overall universe of travel, online brokerage/PC banking and home electronics sites on the Web is 116,000; 7,400; and 6,600, respectively.

Based on analysis, Cyveillance estimates that there are approximately 6,500 travel sites, 2,000 online brokerage/PC banking sites and 400 home electronics sites (selling three or more types of products) that are fully e-Commerce enabled, connoting the ability to execute transactions online.

shopping online today, the need for e-Commerce-enabled sites is growing rapidly, however fewer sites than expected are actually meeting that need in the three industries studied.

More than 400,000 Web sites in the travel, brokerage and electronics industries were downloaded by Cyveillance's proprietary NetSapien(TM) Technology for this study.

Of the industries Cyveillance studied, the home electronics industry was out in front for e-Commerce with nearly half (49%) of the sites studied offering online transactions, followed by nearly 30% of online brokerages or PC banking sites.

Only 6% of travel sites studied offered full e-Commerce capabilities; this number appears low because many link directly to the Sabre system, where consumers can complete a transaction.

The study also uncovered key trends evolving in the privacy/security, customer loyalty and new sales model arenas:

- Only 20% of sites studied have privacy policies (as would be

expected, sites in the online brokerage/PC-banking arena had the

highest percentage of privacy policies at 30%).

- Affiliate programs are not being widely implemented, as only 3%

of the sites analyzed an·a·lyze

 offer affiliate programs.

- Only 4% of sites studied offer merchandise incentives to

encourage customers to make purchases.

- A mere 1% of sites studied offer any type of incentive points.
