CytoDyn Shareholders Shown HIV/AIDS Breakthrough.LOS ANGELES -- Shareholders attending the 2005 Annual Meeting of CytoDyn, Inc. (OTCBB OTCBB See OTC Bulletin Board (OTCBB). :CYDY) in Los Angeles, Calif., were treated to a multimedia scientific presentation by Dr. Glenn Morrison, Director of Clinical Development for Symbion Research International, CytoDyn's CRO. The report by Dr. Morrison detailed the human experience to date for Cytolin(R), the Company's targeted immune therapy for treating HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome . In addition to providing preliminary evidence for safety and efficacy, results from these FDA-sanctioned in vivo experiments included some provocative data that could sharpen our understanding of the human immune system. Cytolin(R) is the first targeted immune therapy for HIV/AIDS that was shown to significantly reduce viral burden in preliminary human studies. The potential advantage is that Cytolin(R) exerts its effect on the immune system and not the virus. As a result, a species of virus resistant to the effects of Cytolin(R) cannot emerge through natural selection because the drug has no effects on the virus itself. In addition to providing an additional treatment for the disease, Cytolin(R) might extend the useful life of the antiretroviral drugs currently used to treat HIV/AIDS, such as Emtriva(R) and Truvada(R) manufactured by Gilead (Nasdaq:GILD), Epzicom(R) and Lexiva(R) manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :GSK GSK GlaxoSmithKline plc (pharmaceutical company) GSK Glycogen Synthase Kinase GSK Gruppentraining Sozialer Kompetenzen (Germany) GSK Greenland Shark (FAO fish species code) ) and Reyataz(R) and Zerit(R) manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) to name a few. If, for instance, random mutation in an infected host produced a species of HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States. that was resistant to the protease inhibitors, then the host's immune system might suppress that species if Cytolin(R) were used as an adjunctive therapy. If so, then the host would not wind up being colonized Colonized This occurs when a microorganism is found on or in a person without causing a disease. Mentioned in: Isolation by a species of virus resistant to the protease inhibitors. |
