Specifically, Cyrix's MMX implementation is software-compatible with the industry standard spec published earlier this year, and will provide an innovative level of performance to accelerate multimedia applications such as DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

, as well as real-time video on the Internet.

MMX-compatibility is one of the key features of Cyrix's next-generation processor, code-named M2, which will be released later this year, with production expected in early '97. MMX consists of 57 new instructions to accelerate multimedia functions, including audio processing, video decompression decompression /de·com·pres·sion/ (de?kom-presh´un) removal of pressure, especially from deep-sea divers and caisson workers to prevent bends, and from persons ascending to great heights.  and graphics.

Cyrix increases multimedia performance in its implementation of MMX with the creation of a unique Scratch Pad memory feature. For designers, the timing and availability of audio, video or graphics information is crucial to system performance. By locking-down lines of the on-board cache, Cyrix created a Scratch Pad Memory for storing time critical pieces of data, which allows the designer to achieve the highest level of performance with a predictable response time.

Robert Maher, vice president, engineering at Cyrix, "Our engineering team met its multimedia architectural goals, for the M2, by ultimately developing host-based multimedia capability at minimal silicon cost. Using advanced design techniques, we integrated MMX compatibility and a high level of multimedia performance with less than 20,000 transistors. This transistor efficiency was created through a unique design that shares the hardware of the Floating Point Unit. The result? High-performance multimedia capability efficiently integrated into existing hardware with minimal complexity and die area."

"Cyrix's MMX technology MMX technology - Matrix Math eXtensions  will offer users significant performance gains processing multimedia data types," said Steve Tobak, vice president of corporate and channel marketing at Cyrix. "MMX also increases the total value proposition of the PC by enabling entry-level computers to accelerate multimedia applications. Cyrix's MMX implementation is a natural progression from our demonstration of the Gx86 processor with multimedia-specific capabilities integrated on chip late last year."
