THE PHYSICS of football and the technology behind tennis are just two of the subjects that will be covered by a series of Institution of Engineering and Technology The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is a British professional body for those working in engineering and technology in the United Kingdom and worldwide.  (IET IET Institution of Engineering and Technology (merged name of IEE and IIE)

The IET Athletic Technology Week, organised by the IET Cyprus Local Network, kicked off on Sunday in Paphos with a lecture on the impact of technology on Olympic sports The Olympic sports comprise all the sports contested in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. The current Olympic program consists of 35 sports with 53 disciplines and more than 400 events — the Summer Olympics include 28 sports with 38 disciplines, and the Winter Olympics . In all, nine lectures will be given by leading sports academics, over six days.

Sports engineering Sports engineering is a field of engineering that involves the design, development and testing of sports equipment. The equipment used by athletes has always gone through technological design and development based on current knowledge and understanding.  has been used for thousand of years to allow sports men and women to improve their performance. It has become more evident in recent years due to the advances in materials, design and the fundamental understanding of the physics of sport.

These lectures use high speed video imagery and advanced computer techniques to explain the physics behind popular sports including football, tennis, cycling and sports seen in the Olympic Games Olympic games, premier athletic meeting of ancient Greece, and, in modern times, series of international sports contests. . The presentation will describe the design features of modern day sports equipment, explaining their introduction and how manufacturers seek to extract that little 'extra' performance.

The lectures are free of charge and open to members and non members of the IET. They are suitable for all ages, in particular with an interest in sport, technology or both. A scientific background is not necessary and questions are encouraged.
