Cyprus Telecommunications Authority Delivers Digital TV and Video on Demand over DSL Service with Cisco Technology.

VENICE, Italy -- Cisco Systems “Cisco” redirects here. For other uses, see Cisco (disambiguation).
Cisco System,Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO, HKSE: 4333 ) is an American multinational corporation with 54,000 employees and annual revenue of US $28.48 billion as of 2006.

Since CYTA's miVision services were launched commercially in July 2004, almost 10% of residential broadband customers throughout the Republic of Cyprus have subscribed to the service. The deployment uses Cisco equipment and was mainly implemented by Cisco Premier Certified partner eNet Solutions, who has built up a strong track record through previous projects involving Cisco and CYTA.

CYTA's visionary approach to developing value-added broadband services to meet customer demand led the Organisation to invest over the past 5 years in IP converged multiservice infrastructures. Cisco and eNet Solutions implemented the Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  aggregation solution for next generation DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) to phase the insertion of Metro Ethernet A metropolitan area network (MAN) that uses a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) backbone rather than SONET/SDH links. Ethernet offers a more economical alternative. In a Metro Ethernet network, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) may be deployed to provide quality of service (QoS).  platforms in high-density metropolitan areas whilst maintaining interoperability with CYTA's ATM infrastructure using the Any Transport over MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS.  (AToM) protocol. This approach helped CYTA to achieve rapid triple-play service enablement and competitive cost structure with an optimized network design. The result is a carrier-grade Metro Ethernet platform combining Gigabit Ethernet DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL.  aggregation for delivery of video over IP and other broadband services to homes using DSL services.

"Cisco brought a lot of extra value to the table by working closely with us in designing the network so that we can put in place ambitious plans to launch exciting new services over DSL to our customer base," explained a CYTA executive. "The Cisco and eNet Solutions team gave us the support to deploy and test the solution thoroughly over a 3 month period and launch a full production service to our customers in July this year."

CYTA selected Cisco 7600 and 7200 Series Routers and Cisco Catalyst 4500 and 6500 switches for a scaleable, high-performance Metro Ethernet solution with intelligence at the network edge to help deliver converged services, with security, and provide QoS functionality to support sophisticated voice and video services. The Cisco solution addresses CYTA's requirement for a scalable platform to meet future subscriber demands with simplified management and provisioning of subscriber services.

"This project with CYTA is a perfect example of co-existence of classical ATM aggregation with next generation Gigabit Ethernet aggregation and demonstrates the viability of Metro Ethernet extension over DSL as a cost-effective way to distribute video over Broadband," said Paolo Campoli, Director of Solutions Marketing, Cisco Systems EMEA. "CYTA's achievement in introducing a TV and Video on Demand over next generation Ethernet DSL platform shows the vision of the CYTA executive team and their commitment to continuously develop new services to improve profitability as well as increase customer loyalty and penetration in their market."
