Cyprus President Christofias congratulates Papandreou on his victory.

President Demetris Christofias has congratulated, in a telephone conversation, George Papandreou, PASOK leader, on his victory in Sunday's national elections in Greece.

According to the Athens News Agency, President Christofias was amongst the first state leaders who congratulated Papandreou on his election victory.

Papandreou also received a phone call from US President Barack Obama, who said he wanted to be amongst the first to congratulate the PASOK leader.

The Socialist party PASOK led by George Papandreou, a former Foreign Minister, won the election in Greece with almost 10% head against ruling Conservatives party of New Democracy and will form a government, having secured the majority of seats in the Greek Parliament.

According to the Greek Ministry of the Interior, PASOK received 43,94% and 160 seats, New Democracy 33,49% and 91 seats, Greek Communist Party 7,83% and 20 seats, Popular Orthodox Rally 5,54% and 15 seats, Coalition of the Radical Left 4,51% and 12 seats. Ecologists Greens received 2,52% of the vote and did not manage to exceed the 3% electoral threshold needed to enter Parliament.
