, President Christofias was amongst the first state leaders who congratulated Papandreou on his election victory.

Papandreou also received a phone call from US President Barack Obama, who said he wanted to be amongst the first to congratulate the PASOK leader.

The Socialist party PASOK led by George Papandreou, a former Foreign Minister, won the election in Greece with almost 10% head against ruling Conservatives party of New Democracy and will form a government, having secured the majority of seats in the Greek Parliament.

According to the Greek Ministry of the Interior, PASOK received 43,94% and 160 seats, New Democracy 33,49% and 91 seats, Greek Communist Party 7,83% and 20 seats, Popular Orthodox Rally 5,54% and 15 seats, Coalition of the Radical Left The Coalition of the Radical Left (Greek: Συνασπισμός Ριζοσπαστικής Αριστεράς,  4,51% and 12 seats. Ecologists Greens received 2,52% of the vote and did not manage to exceed the 3% electoral threshold needed to enter Parliament.
