In unanimously adopting resolution 657 (1990), the Council also asked that Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar Pé·rez de Cuél·lar , Javier Born 1920. On behalf of the Council members, Council President Pierre-Louis Blanc of France stated that it was regrettable that, in the more than 25 years since UNFICYP's establishment, it had not been possible to achieve a negotiated settlement for all aspects of the Cyprus problem. The Secretary-General on 31 May reported (S/21340) that UNFICYP's continued presence in the island remained "indispensable" to achieve the Council's objectives. The Force was created in 1964 to help prevent a recurrence recurrence /re·cur·rence/ (-ker´ens) the return of symptoms after a remission.recur´rent re·cur·rence n. 1. of fighting and restore normal conditions
Mr. Perez de Cuellar recalled that the Council, in its resolution 649 (1990) of 12 March 1990, had asked him to inform it of progress made in resuming the "intensive talks" among himself and the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, and in developing an agreed outline of an overall agreement as agreed in June 1989. Since then, the Secretary-General said he had pursued his efforts. Consultations with two sides In May, Gustave Feissel, Director for Special Political Affairs Political Affairs has several meanings:

On 31 May, Mr. Perez de Cuellar appealed for voluntary contributions to finance UNFICYP. |
