Cypress Semiconductor (NYSE NYSE

:CY) today announced that its EZ-USB(R) FX2(TM) peripheral controller has successfully passed the full suite of compliance tests set by the USB Implementers Forum The USB Implementers Forum, USB-IF, is a non-profit organisation to promote and support the Universal Serial Bus. Its main activities are the promotion and marketing of USB, Wireless USB, USB On-The-Go, and the maintenance of the specifications, as well as a compliance program.  (USB-IF). It becomes the first hi-speed USB microcontroller to be certified by the USB-IF, allowing Cypress to use the USB 2.0 certification logo. EZ-USB FX2 will also be added to the USB-IF Integrators List. signifying to peripheral vendors that the EZ-USB FX2 has met the strict specifications for hi- and full-speed interface devices.

"USB 2.0 is a solution that delivers real benefits over other interface technologies," said Jason Ziller, Intel's technology initiatives manager and chairman of the USB-IF. "By passing USB-IF compliance testing, Cypress will be a significant contributor in driving USB 2.0 toward ubiquity in PC connectivity."

"The EZ-USB FX2 family makes it possible for a wide array of applications to take advantage of USB 2.0's high speed and ease of connectivity," said Jeff Chang, USB product marketing manager at Cypress. "We have been working closely with peripheral designers worldwide, helping them design next-generation USB solutions. Now that our peripheral controller has been certified to completely meet USB 2.0 specifications, we expect to start seeing these products hitting the market soon."

USB links PCs to their peripherals in true "plug-and-play" fashion, making PCs much easier to use. The USB 2.0 standard, which transmits data at up to 480 Mbps, makes the speed of the peripheral-to-PC connection up to 40 times faster than USB 1.1. USB 2.0 solidifies USB as the standard connection bus of the future for demanding high-speed applications such as mass storage, Internet access appliances, local area networks (LANs), wireless LANs and digital multimedia.

Cypress has created an extremely flexible, yet cost-effective single-chip solution that provides superior time-to-market advantages. In its EZ-USB FX2 controller, Cypress has integrated the USB 2.0 transceiver, intelligent Serial Interface Engine (SIE SIE Sierra Health (stock symbol)
SIE Serial Interface Engine
SIE Serviciul de Informatii Externe (Romanian: Intelligence Service for the Exterior)
SIE Società Italiana di Endocrinologia
), enhanced 8051 core, and a General Programmable InterFace (GPIF GPIF Government Pension Investment Fund (Japan) ).
