The presentation, featuring Cypress and Agilent product managers, will identify telecom market trends fueling demand for next-generation Sonet/SDH chips, highlight recent Sonet/SDH standards now being implemented in silicon, such as Virtual Concatenation Virtual concatenation (VCAT) is an inverse multiplexing technique used to split SONET/SDH bandwidth into logical groups, which may be transported or routed independently. Alternate SONET/SDH concatenation techniques are contiguous concatenation and arbitrary concatenation.  and the Generic Framing Procedure Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) is defined by ITU-T G.7041. This allows mapping of variable length, higher-layer client signals over a transport network like SDH/SONET. The client signals can be protocol data unit (PDU) oriented (like IP/PPP or Ethernet Media Access Control) or can  (GFP GFP Green Fluorescent Protein

Semiconductor manufacturers are rolling out next-generation Sonet/SDH silicon that promises to have a big impact on the price and performance of telecom equipment, especially in metro networks. The chips implement newly minted standards aimed at carrying packet-based traffic, notably Gigabit Ethernet, over Sonet/SDH infrastructure in far more efficient ways.

The significance of these developments is enormous, because they address a key issue for carriers -- how to accommodate huge increases in Internet traffic while continuing to support the circuit-based services like telephony and leased lines that still generate most of their revenues.
