Cypress MicroSystems' Powerful New PSoC Enhances Integrated Systems Control.

LYNNWOOD, Wash. -- Highest Integration Programmable System-on-Chip(TM) (PSoC(TM)) Features 2X Program Memory, 4X Data Store and Doubled Digital Resources to Address More Complex Applications

Cypress MicroSystems Cypress MicroSystems (CMS) markets high-performance, field Programmable System-on-a-Chip (PSoC) integrated M8 micro-based solutions. CMS is based in Lynnwood, near Seattle, Washington and was established as a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation in the fourth quarter of  Inc., a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE NYSE

:CY), today announced production of a new member of its Programmable System-on-Chip(TM) (PSoC(TM)) mixed-signal arrays. Featuring expanded digital integration functionality, the new devices extend the reach of the popular PSoC architecture to address larger and more complex embedded control functions in consumer, industrial, office automation, telecom and automotive applications.

"We are seeing strong customer demand for increased digital functionality to increase integration of peripheral functionality," said John McDonald, VP of Marketing at Cypress MicroSystems. "Our new PSoC devices double the number of digital resources available for on-chip integration."

With 12 configurable analog and 16 configurable digital blocks, the CY8C29xxx family doubles the number of digital peripherals in the PSoC product line, providing the capability to integrate more timers, counters and PWMs. For example, the new device can integrate four full-duplex UARTs and adds the ability to integrate four 14-bit ADCs in a single PSoC chip. The new devices also include two MACs with 8-bit multipliers and 32-bit accumulators, enabling parallel math paths with simultaneous digital filters while minimizing MPU See microprocessor.  overhead. System designers also benefit from increased memory resources -- 32 Kbytes of flash for programs and 2 kbytes of SRAM See static RAM.

About the PSoC Family

A true system-on-a-chip, PSoC devices are configurable mixed signal arrays that integrate the microcontroller and related peripheral circuits typically found in an embedded design. This mixed signal integration allows customers to significantly reduce the number of components they have to use, greatly improving system quality and reliability and drastically lowering bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on. . Employing easy to use development tools, designers select configurable, pre-characterized library elements to provide analog functions such as amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, filters and comparators and digital functions such as timers, counters, PWMs, SPI (1) (Stateful Packet Inspection) See stateful inspection.

and UARTs. PSoC analog performance is instrumentation-quality -- including rail-to-rail inputs, programmable gain, 14-bit ADCs and exceptionally low noise and input leakage and voltage offset.

In addition to these configurable analog and digital blocks, PSoC devices include a fast 8-bit microcontroller, up to 32KB of Flash memory, 2KB of SRAM, an 8x8 multiplier with 32-bit accumulator, power and sleep monitoring circuits, a precision real time clock and hardware I2C I2C Inter-Integrated Circuit

communications. All PSoC family members are compatible and users can seamlessly migrate their existing designs between devices with minimal effort.

All PSoC devices are dynamically reconfigurable, enabling designers to create new system functions on-the-fly. Re-configuring the same silicon for different functions on different clock cycles, designers can achieve more than 120 percent utilization of the die in many cases. In the automotive PSoC LIN bus reference design, the same transistors are re-configured four times to support the different LIN communication modes; in doing so, these blocks consume less than 10 percent of PSoC hardware resources and less than 10 percent of the PSoC MCU (1) (MicroController Unit) A computer on a single chip. Software and Support

The software development environment, PSoC Designer 4.2 is a full-featured, GUI-based design tool suite that enables the user to configure their design in silicon with simple point and click options; code the MCU in either C or assembly language; and debug To correct a problem in hardware or software. Debugging software means locating the errors in the source code (the program logic). Debugging hardware means finding errors in the circuit design (logical circuits) or in the physical interconnections of the circuits.  the design using sophisticated features such as event triggers and multiple break points while single-stepping through the code in C or assembly or a mix of the two. PSoC Designer 4.2 is free and can be downloaded at http://www.cypress.com/support/link.cfm?sd=4.

The CY3215-DK Professional Class Development Kit includes a full-speed in-circuit emulator with a large trace buffer, which seamlessly integrates with PSoC Designer 4.2. The development kit includes everything necessary to complete a design with the PSoC family of ICs. The kits also contain all materials for the first four "Tele-training" classes offered on line by Cypress. The tools are designed to keep the cost of development to a minimum while providing all the features found in tools that cost $2,000 or more. The CY3215-DK is priced at $599.
