Cypress's USB Developer's Kit allows designers to begin immediate development of firmware and associated system drivers for USB peripherals such as mice, joysticks, and gamepads, offering a head-start in the booming USB market. It includes a full-speed hardware emulator, giving designers simple, complete in-circuit emulation capability with an easy-to-use method to quickly implement USB protocols in peripheral devices.

It offers user-configurable break points; single-stepping; and full register, RAM, and I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

The Developer's Kit consists of the hardware emulator, development software, a power supply, complete documentation, and now, source code for popular peripherals. Microsoft Corp. has developed USB application code using the kit.

"By reducing the price and including source code, we are offering unmatched value in this kit," said Paul Novell, USB Product Marketing Manager for Cypress. "We have sold over 200 kits, and have design wins with leading mouse and joystick vendors. The price reduction will broaden our reach to include an even wider range of customers and applications."

About Cypress USB Microcontrollers

Cypress's new USB microcontrollers, which are shipping now, provide the industry's best solution for implementing USB in peripherals. They offer a tiny die size of only 5.9 Kmils (squared) for very low cost, and are the first low-cost USB microcontrollers to include EPROM-programmability for added flexibility and time-to-market advantages.

Quick and Easy Testing and Code Implementation

The Cypress USB Development Kit allows designers to either implement firmware in on-board EPROM EPROM

The RAM option provides a quick and easy method for testing firmware revisions. The program RAM allows users to download code into memory, providing a quick and easy mechanism for firmware modification.

The firmware can be modified after download by changing individual bytes of code through the debug To correct a problem in hardware or software. Debugging software means locating the errors in the source code (the program logic). Debugging hardware means finding errors in the circuit design (logical circuits) or in the physical interconnections of the circuits.  interface. In addition, a standalone mode allows portable system operation. In this case, user firmware is loaded in EPROM, and only power need be applied to produce a fully operating emulated USB chip.

Easy Installation

The development system is simple to install and get running. An enclosed 110 VAC (Volts Alternating Current) See volt and AC.  wall transformer supplies power to the emulator. Once software is installed, an RS-232 cable provides connection to a PC for the debug and monitoring environment. The cable and adapters provide support for either a 9- or 25-pin serial port on the PC.

Price and Availability

The Cypress USB Development Kit is available today, priced at $495. Customers can call Cypress at 800/858-1810 in the United States for more information.
