Cylink Announces First Product Using CEPA; Cylink SecureAccess Can Switch From DES to CEPA; Users Can Choose.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 4, 1996--Cylink Corp. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

(TM), a powerful 128-bit key, data encryption method exclusive to Cylink.

It is also the first remote access security system to incorporate both the data encryption standard See DES.

Data Encryption Standard - (DES) The NBS's popular, standard encryption algorithm. It is a product cipher that operates on 64-bit blocks of data, using a 56-bit key. It is defined in FIPS 46-1 (1988) (which supersedes FIPS 46 (1977)).
(DES) and a significantly stronger algorithm (in this case, CEPA) into one product.

CEPA provides strong encryption to domestic and international corporations that wish to protect their valuable assets. The algorithm is immune to key exhaustion and sophisticated cryptoanalytic attacks. The commercial availability of CEPA increases the global market potential for Cylink products.

"As a leader in encryption technology and network security, Cylink has focused on providing the highest possible level of encryption in its products," said Dr. Jim Omura, acting chief executive officer, Cylink Corp.

"Companies require stronger algorithms to do business abroad or maintain overseas suppliers and manufacturers, and CEPA addresses this problem. With CEPA they can communicate securely, exchange delivery schedules, purchasing agreements, legal briefs, design specifications, bids, contracts, pricing information and so forth."

Omura also noted that SecureAccess with CEPA addresses the needs of the growing numbers of users with mobile offices that require them to conduct business from anyplace in the world.

Using SecureAccess, a U.S. corporation can use DES or CEPA internally and provide the DES or CEPA product to their foreign subsidiaries, suppliers, manufacturers and contractors. When e-mail messages or sensitive documents are transferred, the system can automatically switch from one to the other.

"Many of our customers have expressed their enthusiasm about the system's being able to switch from CEPA to DES because it allows them to deploy security worldwide," said Cliff Reeser, product marketing manager for Cylink's SecureAccess system. "We will be shipping the first SecureAccess system with CEPA this week."

The SecureAccess system consists of a SecureGate(TM) server located at a network access site and a choice of client security products for remote computers: SecureTraveler(TM) software for remote users, and SecurePocket(TM) Traveler hardware encryptors for use with any modem or RS232 communications.

SecureAccess uses X.509 digital certificates and Diffie-Hellman public key cryptography An encryption method that uses a two-part key: a public key and a private key. To send an encrypted message to someone, you use the recipient's public key, which can be sent to you via regular e-mail or made available on any public Web site or venue.  techniques for positive identification and encryption of communications between parties. The system capacity is scaleable to manage up to 896 dial-in lines and an unlimited number of clients. It is transparent to the user and easy to set up and administer.

Cylink holds exclusive rights to the fundamental public key cryptography patents owned by the Leland Stanford Junior University, Cryptographic Apparatus and Method (Hellman-Diffie) No. 4,200,770, and Public Key Cryptography Apparatus and Method (Hellman-Merkle) No. 4,218,582. These patents cover all implementations of public key cryptography, including Diffie-Hellman key exchange Diffie-Hellman (D-H) key exchange is a cryptographic protocol that allows two parties that have no prior knowledge of each other to jointly establish a shared secret key over an insecure communications channel.  and the digital signature standard (DSS).

The networking industry has adopted Cylink's Diffie-Hellman automated key management technique as the de-facto standard. Diffie-Hellman is part of the existing and proposed business and financial security standards of ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors.
