Cygnus Solutions Releases Source-Navigator 3.3.1; Sourcecode Comprehension Tool Maximizes Developers' Productivity with Added Functionality for Projects Exceeding One Million Lines of Code.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 1997--Cygnus Solutions, the leader in cross-platform development tools for 32- and 64-bit microprocessors, today announced the immediate availability of Source-Navigator 3.3.1, an industry-leading multi-platform, multi-language, graphical sourcecode browsing and editing tool.

Source-Navigator is the only sourcecode comprehension tool available that allows quick and easy visualization of existing, large-scale software projects in C/C C/C Center to Center

++, Java, Tel and FORTRAN without requiring changes to developers' methodologies or software management systems. Cygnus also announced today Source-Navigator Lite, a configuration of Source-Navigator that is targeted at single developers and is available free-of-charge.

"The enhanced release of Source-Navigator 3.3.1. marks Cygnus' commitment to providing leading-edge software development tools with UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
and Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  cross-platform portability," said Kaz Hashimoto, president and chief executive officer of Cygnus Solutions Cygnus Solutions, originally Cygnus Support, was founded in 1989 by John Gilmore, Michael Tiemann and David Henkel-Wallace to provide commercial support for free software. Its tagline was: Making free software affordable. . "Cygnus offers tools that satisfy and scale to developers' needs, from a free configuration of Source-Navigator Lite for the single developer to Source-Navigator 3.3.1 for projects involving teams of engineers working on large-scale projects."

Users that manage large, complex code-bases or maintain legacy projects realize significant, quantifiable time savings in understanding existing code as well as in re-structuring and re-engineering existing software with Source-Navigator. Based on browser and database technologies, the architecture of Source-Navigator provides users quick visualization and navigation within software projects. Source-Navigator is also customizable, with a scriptable API (Application Programming Interface) A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol.  that easily allows integration into other sourcecode processes, including configuration management, documentation and testing. Source-Navigator aids developers in determining which components are impacted within a project by enabling the visualization of code changes, giving developers increased efficiency of the test and integration process.

"With Source-Navigator, it is much easier to manage large, complex, software development projects involving a team of engineers," said Keith Searight, software engineer at CogniSeis Development, a leading-edge geoscience ge·o·sci·ence

software company. "Source-Navigator maximizes our software developers' productivity by bringing new engineers up-to-speed quickly. CogniSeis purchased a license to run on five different UNIX and PC platforms we support," continued Searight.

"CogniSeis successfully used Source-Navigator to reverse-engineer 1.3 million lines of legacy C/C++ code, easily navigate through the code and detect critical code dependencies," said Searight. "With Source-Navigator, we can efficiently locate and fix bugs and add feature enhancements to provide the responsiveness our oil industry customers enjoy and expect from CogniSeis."

Source-Navigator Lite

The introduction of Source-Navigator Lite demonstrates Cygnus' commitment to making the company's tools freely and widely available. Source-Navigator Lite is a size-limited version of Source-Navigator 3.3.1 for the single developer that offers full functionality on projects featuring up to 50,000 lines of code The statements and instructions that a programmer writes when creating a program. One line of this "source code" may generate one machine instruction or several depending on the programming language. A line of code in assembly language is typically turned into one machine instruction. . Source-Navigator Lite is the default configuration when installing and it is available for use free-of-charge. Developers can upgrade to the production version by purchasing a license key form Cygnus. A license key will allow the built-in database to scale to support projects exceeding one million lines of code, and provides full access to the API.

Maximizing Developers' Productivity

Source-Navigator enables developers to understand and visualize complex code relationships on the fly -- maximizing developers' productivity:

-- Scalability based on database technology -- the tool parses and builds a relational database relational database

Database in which all data are represented in tabular form. The description of a particular entity is provided by the set of its attribute values, stored as one row or record of the table, called a tuple.
of the project and provides real-time querying of code relationships such as cross-references and hierarchy.

-- Powerful visualization -- inheriting projects is simplified when the architecture of the sourcecode can be viewed and understood, regardless of "institutional knowledge."

-- Shortened learning curve -- new engineers brought up to speed faster by browsing structural views of an entire project.

-- Understanding large and complex projects -- all developers can understand greater contextual information and assess the impact of their code on an entire project, thereby increasing the efficiency of the test and integration phase.

Source-Navigator is immediately available on CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.
