Cygnet Introduces First DVD-RAM Jukebox; Cygnet's Modular Infinidisc Is Now Integrated With Hitachi's DVD-RAM Drive.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1998--Cygnet Storage Solutions, Inc. today announced that the Infinidisc(TM) is now adapted for use with DVD-RAM A rewritable DVD disc endorsed by the DVD Forum. Using phase change technology, DVD-RAMs are like removable hard disks, and the media can be rewritten 100,000 times compared to 1,000 times for DVD-RW and DVD+RW. The first DVD-RAM drives with a capacity of 2.6GB (single sided) or 5.  technology.

Cygnet's powerful and reliable CD jukebox, equipped with Hitachi's GF-1050 DVD-RAM drive, becomes the first jukebox for medium and high capacity storage to implement DVD-RAM drives and media.

With the integration of the Hitachi DVD-RAM drive, the Infinidisc(TM), which began shipping in early January 1997, scores a number of records. Cygnet's innovative jukebox, highly regarded by the industry for its flexibility, expandable and upgradable features, can be configured with 2 to 8 fully rewritable DVD-RAM drives and can accommodate up to 500 DVD-RAM single-sided discs.

It is the first jukebox for CD-type media to reach, at its maximum capacity, 1.3 terabytes of archive or backup storage and the first optical jukebox to bring storage costs down to 2.5 cents per MByte including media.

The Infinidisc(TM) can also mix and match CD and DVD-RAM drives offering an increased variety of custom configurations to end users. Other notable benefits of the DVD-RAM Infinidisc(TM) include durable, long-life archival media and compliance with the Universal Disc Format standard (UDF (1) (Universal Disk Format) A file system for optical media developed by the Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA), www.osta.org, based on the ECMA 167/ISO 13346 standard. ). The DVD-RAM Infinidisc(TM) can read any single-sided DVD-RAM disc and, since DVD-RAM drives can read CDs, current CD users can also upgrade to DVD-RAM jukeboxes and still make the most of their CD archives.

"Cygnet cygnet

a young swan.
has committed to respond to customer needs and requirements and is delivering on its promise to integrate multiple drive technologies into a standardized system configuration," said Wayne Augsburger, vice president of marketing at Cygnet Storage Solutions, Inc. "With the integration of the DVD-RAM drive from Hitachi, the Infinidisc(TM) becomes the first CD jukebox to support DVD-RAM technology. The result is a unique combination of customer-oriented functionality, greatly increased capacity and lowest cost ever per MByte which makes the Infinidisc(TM) the ideal storage solution for applications that have been anxiously awaiting DVD-RAM technology, such as document archival, network server file backup and multimedia storage."

The Hitachi GF-1050 is a 5.25-in. half-height DVD-RAM drive with a fast SCSI-2 interface, providing a maximum data transfer rate of 10 MBytes/second. It performs both recording and reading at a sustained transfer rate of 1.38 MBytes/second with an average access time of 210 ms. Hitachi has demonstrated the compatibility of DVD-RAM media manufactured to the specifications set by the DVD Forum, and the company designed the drive to be read-compatible with DVD-ROM DVD-ROM: see digital versatile disc.

A read-only DVD disc used to permanently store data files. DVD-ROM discs are widely used to distribute large software applications that exceed the capacity of a CD-ROM disc.
, DVD-R (DVD-Recordable) A write-once (read only) DVD disc for both movies and data endorsed by the DVD Forum. DVD-Rs are often called "DVD Dash Rs" or "DVD Minus Rs" to distinguish them from the competing "Plus R" format (see DVD+R). , CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

Type of computer storage medium that is read optically (e.g., by a laser).
, CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. , CD-RW (CD-ReWritable) The only rewritable CD technology. CD-RW disks look like other CD media, but with close inspection, they have a more polished surface with a very dark blue-gray cast.  and CD-DA (Compact Disc-Digital Audio) The original compact disc format developed by Sony and Philips in the 1980s, which was designed for audio only. Since "CD" is used loosely for all Compact Disc formats, the CD-DA designation differentiates a music disc or player . The single drive can replace all previous types of CD-type media drives.

"We are excited about the prospects for DVD-RAM in jukeboxes like Cygnet's Infinidisc(TM)," said Werner Glinka, senior director of marketing for optical storage products at Hitachi America, Ltd. "The GF-1050 DVD-RAM, SCSI interface drive is a fully rewritable, high-capacity random access storage technology which, coupled with UDF file format, enables CD/DVD jukeboxes like the Infinidisc(TM) to compete vigorously with optical jukeboxes based on more costly 5.25-in. magneto-optical technologies.  performance of the GF-1050 makes optical storage viable for a greater range of applications than ever before".

Currently, the Infinidisc(TM) is supported by software from industry-leading vendors of CD-based jukebox software such as Smart Storage, OTG Software, iXOS, Tracer, MacPeak and others. Smart Storage support for the Cygnet Infinidisc(TM) configured with the Hitachi GF-1050 DVD-RAM SCSI drive is expected to be available in the third quarter of 1998. A four-drive configuration Infinidisc(TM) including 500 pieces of 2.6 GB rewritable media will sell at about $33,000, a per megabyte cost of 2.5 cents.

Cygnet will be exhibiting the DVD-RAM Infinidisc(TM) jukebox at the AIIM (Association for Information and Image Management International, Silver Spring, MD, www.aiim.org) A membership organization founded in 1943 devoted to creating industry standards and disseminating information about the document management industry.  Show in Anaheim, Calif., May 12-14, 1998 -- Booth 138. The DVD-RAM Infinidisc is expected to ship in the third quarter of 1998.
