SEBASTIAN, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 1996--XL Computing Corp., a Cycomm International Inc. business (AMEX:CYI) announced that it has become a GTE Business Partner to jointly pursue projects involving cellular digital packet data (CDPD) integration services.

XL Computing specializes in ruggedized and secure computers for mobile applications.

XL Computing's PCMobile ruggedized laptop has been specifically designed for the Public Safety and Public Utility market for optimal mobility, flexibility and performance under severe operating conditions.

The PCMobile has supported internal and external RF modems for several years. External CDPD modems have become common in the last year and now the PCMobile supports an internal CDPD modem. This allows an officer to remain in contact even when using the PCMobile outside of the patrol car.

CDPD uses the existing cellular telephone infrastructure to reliably and securely transmit short data packets. Many small and medium size police departments cannot afford to upgrade their voice radio system to support data transmission.

The cellular service is already in place and with the cost of modem, the officer can stay connected all of the time. A short message over CDPD costs one to two cents, with no charges for roaming. CDPD transmissions are fast, reliable and particularly well suited for transaction-based data traffic.
