Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 1996--CyberMedia Inc. Oil Change software compares current software and driver revision levels on a user's Windows PC An x86-based computer that runs some version of Windows. See x86 and Windows. to update revision levels available from vendor support sites. It notifies users when updates are available, and after asking permission, automatically fetches and installs them. Oil Change scans its host Windows PC to determine the revision level of every software file for which this is possible. It investigates the files themselves, entries in INI See INI file. configuration files and, on Windows 95 systems, entries in the registry. It builds a local inventory of files, their locations and their current revision levels. It does this everywhere possible: applications, utilities, the operating system, environment and peripheral driver (.COM (1) (Computer Output Microfilm) Creating microfilm or microfiche from the computer. The Oil Change central registry is a robust remote host with its own inventory. Through a combination of manual and automated research, the central registry maintains an inventory of vendor update files, their online locations, the revision levels they represent and other appropriate data. When a user's Oil Change utility connects with the Oil Change central registry, it automatically compares the current revision levels within its inventory with the update revision levels accessible from vendor online support sites. At the user's option, these connections can happen automatically, per a specified schedule, or on demand. Oil Change always notifies its user when more recent updates are available, and gives the user the option to do nothing at that time, or to (only) retrieve the necessary update file, or to retrieve the file and automatically install the update. The download process always includes an automatic verification of all software, assuring authenticity. Oil Change supports Internet security standards, including PKCS (Public Key Cryptography Standards) Specifications from RSA Laboratories for various techniques used with RSA public key cryptography. With cooperation from security experts worldwide, PKCS #1 covers the RSA standard itself. 7 digital signatures and X.509 Certificates. Oil Change also pre-scans all software for viruses, providing users and vendors an added measure of protection. Since some updates occasionally go "sour", Oil Change maintains a backup copy of the pre-update software and configuration, making it easy to undo any update. Oil Change will be available in September for less than $70 (suggested U.S. resale at participating resellers).
