CyberGuard Thwarts New Breed of Worms With Intrinsic Intrusion Prevention and Protocol Anomaly Detection.

In practice, many of these groupings may overlap.  earlier this year, the new worm known as Swen should pose no threat to businesses using information security appliances from CyberGuard Corporation, (Nasdaq:CGFW), the technology leader in network security. The company's line of firewall and virtual private network (VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks. ) appliances incorporate strong application proxy technology, intrinsic intrusion prevention See IPS and IDS.  and protocol anomaly detection that serve to proactively protect networks from application level attacks.

Mike Wittig, vice president of development and chief technology officer, stated, "CyberGuard has offered protection against attacks at the application level since we first began developing our firewall technology because we understood that that was where networks were most vulnerable. The Swen worm is designed to take advantage of unsuspecting users who believe they are receiving a valid notice to update their Microsoft operating system. Our appliances allow companies to block the part of the message that requires action, known as an 'executable' attachment."

CyberGuard security appliances protect against the Swen worm and others like it in several ways.

(1) CyberGuard's strong SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet and part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, as defined by IETF RFC 2821. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail.  (simple mail transfer protocol See SMTP.

application proxy enables companies to block all executables

and strip them automatically from incoming mail.

(2) The SMTP proxy can also be configured to block only certain

executables with identifiable characteristics so companies can

continue to allow inbound e-mail with wanted executable

attachments.

(3) The appliances incorporate support for content vectoring

) technology, enabling companies to use

sophisticated virus scanners such as F-Secure that work

aggressively to protect against new virus and worm threats.

CyberGuard also offers another advanced form of intrusion prevention technology, known as protocol anomaly detection, which allows companies to proactively and automatically protect their networks. Many e-mail viruses co-opt address books and attempt to deliver the replicated virus or worm to large numbers of recipients. CyberGuard's protocol anomaly detection technology automatically blocks message headers that are abnormally long.

Wittig explained, "As more attacks take advantage of vulnerabilities in the everyday applications that companies use to conduct business, application proxy firewalls become increasingly important to network security. A robust application proxy firewall such as CyberGuard's provides the strongest form of intrusion prevention."
