CyberGuard Teams with GTE on Bastille Project to Use Internet to Fight Crime Around the Country.

National Law Enforcement Agencies 

CyberGuard Corporation, a leading provider of network security and electronic commerce solutions, today announced that GTE has selected CyberGuard's award-winning Firewall and related security products for use in The Bastille(SM) project, a secure web-based service for law enforcement agencies around the country.

The Bastille is a multimillion dollar GTE-led project announced earlier today at the 104th annual conference of the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Orlando, Florida. This web-based service provides access to a database of vital information on criminal offenders and enables real-time communication among local, regional and national law enforcement agencies so they can fight crime. GTE Enterprise Solutions, a unit of GTE Corp., will spearhead this project on a national basis.

Beginning in November, a six-month trial period of The Bastille will be available to a dozen Texas law enforcement agencies who will provide feedback to GTE to ensure the program meets their specific needs. The Bastille is scheduled to be available to a targeted 25,000 law enforcement agencies in February, 1998.

The Bastille provides officers of the law with web-based access tools that allow them to search or post information in the databases about criminal activities including "gang and drug watch," missing or abducted children alerts, and criminal or missing persons information. This innovative solution takes advantage of computer technology to lift geographic boundaries in enforcing the law. The Bastille combines the speed of modern telecommunications technology, advanced, encrypted data transmission service, firewall technology and smart card reader hardware, plus easy-to-use browser software to navigate through the database.

The CyberGuard Firewall, integrated with Information Resource Engineering's SafeNet(TM) security solutions, provide a security framework for The Bastille. Other participating technology companies include Silicon Graphics, Informix, EMC and CyberGuard's strategic partner, Information Resource Engineering.
