CyberGuard Corporation (OTC:CYBG), the technology leader in network security, today announced that its line of premium firewall appliances, which includes CyberGuard STARLord, KnightSTAR and FireSTAR, are the first firewall appliances in the world to receive Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL4) certification, the most prestigious and rigorous IT security evaluation process available.

The accreditation was earned for the CyberGuard(R) Firewall(TM) for Secure UnixWare Release 4.3 software technology and the appliance line, which incorporates the software.

CyberGuard currently has the only premium firewall appliances on the market that combine one of the highest levels of security possible with the processing speed needed by large data centers and demanding applications.

The Common Criteria evaluation of the CyberGuard Firewall was performed by Logica plc, the UK-based information-technology company operating within the UK IT Evaluation and Certification Scheme.

Independent evaluations of earlier versions of the CyberGuard Firewall resulted in certification to the ITSEC E3 level. CyberGuard Firewall was the first firewall to receive this award.

Common Criteria

The Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (CCITSE) is a set of evaluation criteria agreed to by the National Security Agency/National Institute of Standards and Technologies and equivalent bodies worldwide. It was designed to resolve the technical and conceptual differences among existing standards for the evaluation of network security systems and products. Common Criteria version 2.1 recently became an International standard -- ISO 15408.

Certification to the Common Criteria EAL4 requires an in-depth analysis of product design and development methodology, backed up by extensive testing. EAL4 certificates issued in the UK are currently recognized internationally by the following countries: US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Finland, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
