CyberGuard Debuts First Intranet-Specific Firewall; New Products Strengthen Intranet Security Using Microsoft Windows NT.

CyberGuard Corporation (NASDAQ:CYBG), a leading provider of network security and eCommerce solutions, today announced a new firewall designed specifically for securing Intranets.

According to Michael Zboray, a senior Gartner Group information security analyst, "The intranet firewall market will be spurred by the dawning realization among enterprises that security risks from internal threats can be much greater than those originating from the Internet." By announcing its IntraNT Firewall today, CyberGuard Corporation is providing the industry with a solution to address this critical need.

The CyberGuard Intra(tm) NT Firewall meets the internal security needs of large enterprise intranets by securing NT work group applications. The firewall includes several exclusive features that make it particularly well-suited for intranets. These include unique proxies that meet key intranet requirements. A new Lotus Notes-aware proxy provides enhanced security for this leading work group software, and a new Oracle SQL*Net proxy secures Oracle's SQL*Net connections and Oracle SQL database applications.

The new firewall's SmartProxies(tm) enable user authentication and data-transfer integrity between clients and servers while hiding intranet system addresses and user names in mail and news headers. Other proxy network services included in the CyberGuard IntraNT Firewall are Shared Resources, Post Office Protocol (POP3), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), telnet, HTTP and NNTP.

According to Microsoft Corporation, the NT Server is approaching a 50 percent share in the Internet server market and is already the choice for 70 percent of new intranet systems. But there have been numerous reports of security issues with NT.

In October 1996, the Computer Security Institute (CSI) identified twelve outstanding security and controls issues in the NT environment. CSI reported, "Windows NT is designed to meet the Department of Defense requirements for C2 security...The problem is that Windows NT provides limited management tools to look at security administration from the system-side point of view."

Recognizing this critical security issue, a major component of the IntraNT Firewall is CyberGuard's SecureGuard(tm) for NT. This product is a 'security shield' that enhances the protective attributes of the CyberGuard IntraNT Firewall by continuously securing and protecting the Windows NT operating environment. While the IntraNT Firewall provides traditional firewall protection such as access control, the SecureGuard for NT product functions as a "wrapper" around the NT platform by addressing known security exposures within NT.

CyberGuard's goal with the IntraNT Firewall, according to Carberry, is to provide organizations with the strongest intranet security, while simultaneously providing seemless interoperability with the award-winning UNIX Internet firewall product line. CyberGuard's central management capability enables this interoperability.

The CyberGuard IntraNT Firewall is fully compatible with CyberGuard's Central Management product. System administrators can manage networks of CyberGuard IntraNT Firewalls together with networks of CyberGuard UNIX-based Release 4 Internet Firewalls from one central management system. The central management feature reduces the propagation of errors and mistakes throughout the network while substantially improving network administrator productivity and system interoperability.

Unlike competing NT-compatible products, the CyberGuard IntraNT Firewall leverages the NT environment by using the NT Security Domain database to define global user access. This results in increased network administrator productivity by avoiding re-entry of user and authentication data. The IntraNT Firewall's structuring and formatting of dialogs in the graphical user interface is also similar to those in other NT applications, adding to the product's ease of use.

The CyberGuard IntraNT Firewall also includes a packet-filtering feature that supports more than one hundred TCP/IP network services, including TCP, UDP and ICMP protocol-based applications. This feature can be used independently for increased speed or in conjunction with SmartProxies for enhanced security. The result is a highly-customizable intranet firewall suitable for a wide variety of network security demands.

The CyberGuard IntraNT Firewall is the latest addition to the CyberGuard family of enterprise and eCommerce security products. CyberGuard products have previously been certified to the B1 Level of trust by the U.S. National Security Agency's National Computer Security Center (NCSC) and to the E3 level of trust by the European Information Technology Security Evaluation Criteria (ITSEC). CyberGuard continues to support independent government security evaluations and has officially entered its IntraNT Firewall and SecureGuard for NT products into the ITSEC E3 evaluation process.
