CyberGuard Corporation (Nasdaq:CGFW), the technology leader in network security, today announced general availability of the enhanced SME575, a SnapGear by CyberGuard(TM) VPN/firewall appliance with robust new intrusion detection system This article is about the computing term. For other uses, see Burglar alarm.

An intrusion detection system (IDS) generally detects unwanted manipulations of computer systems, mainly through the Internet.

"With the new intrusion detection features in the SME575, SnapGear once again proves that it is on the cutting edge of applied information security technology," said Craig Rodenberg, vice president of information security for The Planet, one of the world's largest managed security hosting providers with 10,000 servers under management. "We rely on SnapGear to provide ultra-secure, ultra-stable network appliances."

The SME575 device, first shipped in August 2003, gives small to medium enterprises a highly integrated solution for perimeter network security and secure communication. SnapGear by CyberGuard appliances are based upon SnapGear Embedded Linux, a secure Linux distribution used in more than 20 million devices that combines the advantages of open source technology and commercial security protection. The open design allows major feature upgrades to be performed through flash memory updates that can be applied to hundreds of devices simultaneously with the SnapGear Central Management System (CMS (1) See content management system and color management system.

"The SME575 brings best of breed open source security and networking technologies used by millions of IT professionals into a single box solution that integrates with existing storage and networking devices," said Peter Cronk Verb 1. cronk - utter a hoarse sound, like a raven

The new IDS is built around the world's most widely-deployed open source software for intrusion detection called Snort An open source network intrusion detection system (NIDS) that is noted for its effectiveness. Developed by Martin Roesch, Snort can also be used just as a packet logger or packet sniffer. For more information, visit www.snort.org. See IDS. (TM). Snort can identify thousands of different attacks through a comprehensive signature database. Network administrators can use graphical open source tools to analyze alerts captured in the system logs to in order to locate -- and quickly correct -- weaknesses in perimeter defenses.

With the new Web cache proxy features powered by Squid(TM), the most popular open source software for proxy cache, the upgraded SME575 also lets customers easily add more users to an existing Internet connection without sacrificing performance. Network users can also enjoy a significantly faster Web surfing experience.

Additional highlights include the ability to configure the appliance as either dual-WAN attachment with fail-over and load balancing or to deploy the second port as a DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) A middle ground between an organization's trusted internal network and an untrusted, external network such as the Internet. Also called a "perimeter network," the DMZ is a subnetwork (subnet) that may sit between firewalls or off one leg of a  (demilitarized zone).
