Cyanotech plans major capacity expansion for natural astaxanthin.


KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 1997--

88 acres to be added in Hawaii to produce astaxanthin

Cyanotech Corp. (NASDAQ/NMS:CYAN) has received approval of its proposal to the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority to lease 88 additional acres within the Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology (HOST) Park.

This lease will double Cyanotech's total acreage within the HOST Park to 178 acres.

The site will be used to construct additional production capacity for the company's new commercial microalgae product, NatuRose, which was announced to the industry at the World Aquaculture aquaculture, the raising and harvesting of fresh- and saltwater plants and animals. The most economically important form of aquaculture is fish farming, an industry that accounts for an ever increasing share of world fisheries production.  '97 Conference in Seattle. NatuRose is the company's brand name for natural astaxanthin, which is a red pigment pigment, substance that imparts color to other materials. In paint, the pigment is a powdered substance which, when mixed in the liquid vehicle, imparts color to a painted surface.  used in the aquaculture industry to impart pink color to the flesh of pen-raised fish and shrimp.

Plans for the newly leased land call for the first phase to include 13 acres of culture systems, together with harvesting and processing equipment sufficient to accommodate the entire site. Completion of the first phase is planned for June 1998.
