At Cyanotech, pilot production has begun on natural Astaxanthin, the red pigment from microalgae planned to compete with synthetic pigments used primarily in the aquaculture industry to impart pink color to the flesh of pen-raised fish and shrimp. The company also has obtained a license to develop, manufacture and sell a genetically engineered blue-green algae containing a natural bacterial toxin, Bti, which, the company believes, when applied to a mosquito-infested body of water could act as an effective and environmentally safe mosquito-control agent. Development of a commercial production system for this product is expected to start later this year.

Cyanotech develops and commercializes natural products from microalgae. The company is currently producing microalgae products for the nutritional supplement and immunological diagnostics markets and is also developing microalgae-based products for the aquaculture feed/pigments, biopesticide and food coloring markets. Nutrex, Inc., the company's wholly-owned subsidiary, produces and markets a line of Spirulina-based nutritional products for the retail market.
