KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii--(BW HealthWire)--Dec. 20, 2001

Cyanotech Corporation (Nasdaq: CYAN), today announced that it is undertaking an expansion of its astaxanthin production capacity by approximately 60% as a result of current and projected future demand for its NatuRose(R) and BioAstin(R) natural astaxanthin products. The Company is operating its current astaxanthin production facility at capacity as a result of strong demand for both products. Cyanotech expects to have the increased capacity in operation during its fourth fiscal quarter ending March 31, 2002.

"Due to successful fish feeding trials, overseas demand for our NatuRose feed ingredient has increased significantly," said Kelly Moorhead, Cyanotech's Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "In addition, several national supplement companies are launching products containing Cyanotech's BioAstin ingredient. With a growing body of scientific evidence supporting human applications, we are seeing a substantial increase in new orders. Cyanotech is uniquely positioned to capitalize on Cap´i`tal`ize on`

Cyanotech's astaxanthin production facility was constructed in 1997 at a cost of approximately $6 million and includes 15 acres of proprietary microalgae growing systems and a state-of-the-art processing facility. The production expansion will increase the number of 140,000 gallon astaxanthin culture ponds from 15 to 25 while utilizing the existing processing facility.
