Cutting edge of music at Factory.


EXPERIMENTAL music, special performances and all things avantgarde are among the attractions at this this weekend's Supersonic Festival at Birmingham Custard Factory.

Now in its seventh year, the event, which begins tonight, boasts the first UK show in 20 years by Italian band Goblin, the reformation of the original Black Country's Head Of David for their first gig in 23 years and the only European performance this summer by Sunn sunn

1. A tropical Asian plant (Crotalaria juncea) having clusters of yellow flowers.

2. A tough fiber obtained from the stems of this plant, used for cordage.

Throughout their career Goblin have sound-tracked around 20 films, with Profondo Rosso, Suspiria and Dawn Of The Dead forming the basis of their reputation.

Recent years have seen a huge resurgence of interest in the band's work.

To mark their visit to Birmingham, Suspiria is being screened at the festival tonight.

There will also be talks, events and workshops alongside the music programme.

The special performances include: n Pram/Filmficcones - Shadow Shows: An Experiment in Surreal Horror. (Sunday).

With split screens, 16mm projections and incorporating the techniques of early cinema, dark collages are accompanied by a live performance by Pram.

Dialed In - Bobby Previte vs Visual Jockey Benton-C Bainbridge. (Tomorrow) Jazz drummer Bobby Previte joins with Benton-C Bainbridge, creating a live improvised audio visual experience.
