Performance Enhancements

Cutting Edge Software, Inc. announces today the release of the latest version of its award-winning Quickoffice(TM) productivity suite for Palm Powered(TM) handheld computers A computing device that can be easily held in one hand while the other hand is used to operate it. The Palm devices are a popular example. See Palm, smartphone and palmtop. . The new version includes a major upgrade in the Quickword word processor, including built-in custom font support and an integrated spell-checking engine and thesaurus. Other improvements to the new version focus on improving the application suite's performance, such as the speed of opening files and better support for portable keyboards Either a very small keyboard or a full-size keyboard that can be folded into a small unit for travel. Portable keyboards are available for PDAs and other handhelds as well as laptops. See virtual keyboard. .

For the first time, Quickword users will be able to view custom fonts on their Palm OS(R) handhelds. Previously, users could select different fonts, but they would not be able to see the effect of their selections until the Quickword document was synchronized syn·chro·nize

To provide this new capability, Cutting Edge Software implemented Hands High Software's FontBucket technology, a font management system that is now seamlessly integrated with Quickword to give users true font support. One of the keys to Cutting Edge Software's success has been to implement sensible performance enhancements without sacrificing features needed by most users. The latest version of Quickoffice is no exception. The company has worked to improve the speed with which users are able to open Quickword files and scroll To continuously move forward, backward or sideways through the text and images on screen or within a window. Scrolling implies continuous and smooth movement, a line, character or pixel at a time, as if the data were on a paper scroll being rolled behind the screen. See auto scroll.  through documents. Another feature, again designed to enable users to leave their laptops behind, is improved performance with the popular Stowaway folding keyboards for Palm OS handhelds. The company has also improved the processing speed See MHz.  of Quicksheet, enabling faster calculations and navigation through spreadsheet cells. Finally, as many documents that are viewed and edited on Palm Powered devices are saved in the standard DOC format, Cutting Edge Software has made it possible to view and edit these files from within the Quickword file list.

"Though Quickoffice was recently named the Best Office Suite for Palm OS handhelds, we are still hard at work adding the features and performance enhancements for our customers," said Paul Moreton, Cutting Edge Software's vice president of marketing and sales. "The Quickoffice suite is a powerful productivity toolkit for mobile professionals who need to get their work done no matter where they are."

Quickoffice is available for purchase at Quickoffice.com or any leading online retailer of Palm OS applications, including PalmGear.com and Handango.com, in addition to leading office supply and electronics retailers nationwide. It retails for US$39.95.
