Cutting Costs How Businesses Can Save Money and Help the Environment

Countless companies could benefit from monitoring their energy usage. Cutting down on unnecessary power consumption will help save money, whilst ensuring they fulfil their corporate social responsibility towards the environment.

The easiest way for any business to cut down on their costs is to cut down on their energy consumption. Making even a few minor changes across an organisation can create significant savings which are noticeable almost immediately.

For example, it''s important to take regular electricity and gas meter readings, as this will enable a more informed approach to energy preservation and will ultimately help guide a business towards a more efficient energy saving strategy.

A simple walk around an office will probably reveal countless areas where there is room for improvement. For example, take note of the types of light bulb that are being used and replace all the normal ones with energy saving ones, and where there are fluorescent strip lights, see if it''s possible to fit smaller versions that require less power.

It''s common for businesses and homeowners to control their heating from one central point. It can be easy to forget that there are radiators located in areas rarely frequented by people ? so ensure they are turned to low or even off altogether. In rooms where there are people, make sure the heaters aren''t covered by furniture. It''s estimated that for each degree that is dropped in temperature, this equates to a monetary saving of around eight per cent.

If an office has a thermostat, ensure it''s not located in a draughty area or close to any heat-emitting device ? this can result in some rooms becoming under-headed or over-heated. Similarly, with water heaters, a maximum of sixty degrees Celsius is recommended, as there is no benefit to heating it any more and it wastes unnecessary energy

Perhaps the most obvious measure a business can take to conserve energy is to ensure all electrical devices are switched off when not in use. Timers are a good way of regulating certain appliances including heaters and computers, and will help ensure they are switched off overnight.

Maintenance is a crucial part of optimising <a href="http://www.npower.com/web/In_business/index.htm
">business energy efficiency and ensuring that all premises are insulated, and windows and doors have draught excluders fitted, will go a long way towards keeping energy wastage to a minimum.

So there are a number of very good reasons why businesses should develop a green strategy, namely it will help them cut costs whilst ensuring that they fulfil their corporate social responsibilities to the environment.
