Compounds reinforced with natural fibers are said to be a cheap, lightweight and ecologically sound alternative to conventional compounds. In cooperation with the bio-process engineering department of Hannover University of Applied Sciences, this company has developed a twin-screw extruder concept for the production of natural fiber compounds. These natural fibers can be directly processed without any energy-intensive pre-drying. The patented Multi-Process-Elements (MPE) used for this purpose are said to ensure particularly gentle and cost-effective incorporation of natural fibers. In addition, the MPEs allow the line to be tailored to the moisture content of the material to be processed, from wood flour or wood fibers up to flax and hemp. A further advantage is said to be that, thanks to the direct processing of the natural fibers without pre-drying, the risk of explosion is eliminated at the same time, according to the company. The polymer is introduced into the feed zone by means of gravimetric metering systems and melted in the plasticizing section. The natural fibers are supplied via downstream side feeders.
