Customs chiefs warn against proliferation of counterfeit goods.


TOKYO, Nov. 13 Kyodo

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was officially established in 1996 at the first summit in Bangkok.
 member economies and organizations warned Tuesday against the proliferation of counterfeit goods, saying it is hurting global economic growth.

''Proliferation of counterfeit goods not only threatens the health, safety and security of consumers, but also hinders innovation and sustained growth of the global economy,'' they said in a statement adopted during a two-day convention held in Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo.

 Customs Director-General-Commissioner Meeting also agreed on the importance of fostering human resources in the field of intellectual property rights and enhancing cooperation among ASEM customs authorities.

ASEM members include member states of the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), organization established by the Bangkok Declaration (1967), linking the nations of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.  as well as China, Japan and South Korea.
