Organizations around the world embraced EMC Automated Networked Storage in the third quarter as customers adopted EMC solutions to help reduce costs, improve business flexibility and automate the management of their heterogeneous environments.

EMC Automated Networked Storage brings SAN, NAS and CAS environments together into an integrated networked storage infrastructure, unifying storage networking technologies, storage platforms, software and services to enable organizations to better and more cost-effectively manage, protect and share their information. In an environment where customers are focused on extracting more value from their technology investment, EMC customers continued to consolidate and manage their multi-vendor environments with integrated automated networked storage in the third quarter, including:

-- Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., one of the nation's largest retail food chains, expanded its EMC networked storage infrastructure and raised storage utilization rates from 30-40% to 85-90%.

-- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Inc. (BCBS), which has 2.4 million members and is New England's largest health plan, purchased EMC Symmetrix networked storage and Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) software for a remote business continuity site to protect and manage its customer service applications.

-- JiangSu Mobile, one of China's largest telecommunications providers, purchased 160 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix systems and EMC ControlCenter open software products to manage its Mobile Business and Operational Support System (BOSS). EMC's focus and expertise in automated networked storage helped it win the business over HP and IBM.

-- Norton Healthcare, a non-profit network of medical services in Kentucky and Southern Indiana, acquired 14 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix networked storage and EMC open management software to provide business continuity for the healthcare provider's medical imaging application.

-- Sixt AG, Germany's leading car rental agency, is replacing its optical document archiving systems with EMC Centera Content Addressed Storage (CAS) to provide affordable, quick and online access to fixed information assets.

-- Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, the nation's leading provider of diagnostic testing, information and services, has standardized on EMC Automated Networked Storage to improve the quality and accuracy of medical-testing services through more reliable, efficient and faster sharing of vital information.

-- Two Applera Corporation businesses, Celera Genomics and Applied Biosystems, purchased 150 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix and CLARiiON networked storage for more efficient, reliable and seamless management of a rapidly growing information infrastructure. Applera is upgrading its present storage systems with EMC as part of a complete upgrade of its computational IT infrastructure, which will support Celera's drug discovery and development efforts and the Knowledge Business of Applied Biosystems.

-- CGI of Canada, North America's fourth-largest independent information technology services firm, has implemented EMC open storage management software to manage Hitachi 9900 and HP StorageWorks systems.
