Customer service starts with a hearty, memorable welcome to new subs.

After subscribing to a magazine and a newsletter, we were impressed with each one's welcome to us. We recommend incorporating elements of each in your own correspondence to new subscribers. They appear in boldface See boldface font.  below.

The newsletter sent a one-page letter on the publication's letterhead, with a smiling photo of the editor and signed by him.

The magazine welcome

As effective as we found the newsletter's welcome letter, we were even more impressed with the magazine's welcoming device--a 7 X 7-inch pamphlet pamphlet, short unbound or paper-bound book of from 64 to 96 pages. The pamphlet gained popularity as an instrument of religious or political controversy, giving the author and reader full benefit of freedom of the press.  folded once to 3.5 X 7.

The cover features the magazine logo and "Subscriber Guide."

Inside is the headline, "Thank you for subscribing to [name]. We appreciate your business and want to ensure that you get the most out of your subscription. This Subscriber Guide is designed to help you do that."

"YOUR LABEL" has an illustration of the subscriber label, pointing out the Subscriber Identification Number and the Expiration Date Expiration Date

"CHANGE OF ADDRESS" explains how to contact the publisher "by mail, by phone, and by e-mail."

"HELPFUL HINT: Please allow 2-3 weeks for the change of address to take effect if you mail your request. Allow one week if your call in your request. Allow one week if you e-mail your request."

"MISSING OR LATE ISSUES" explains the publication's frequency and where to write for missing issues.

"HELPFUL HINT: [Name] may arrive faster if it goes directly to your home address rather than having to be routed through your office mail system."

"GIFT SUBSCRIPTIONS" puts in a pitch for the magazine as "a useful, unique gift--it's a perfect gift particularly for business associates and busy relatives." An address is given for the magazine's Customer Service Gift Department.

"BACK ISSUES" gives the Customer Service Back Issue Order Department address and phone number.

"CONTACT OUR EDITORS" provides the address of the editors, which is different from the other addresses given.

The back of the pamphlet repeats the publication's address and phone numbers and adds its e-mail address See Internet address.

We found the pamphlet appealing because both its appearance and content lend it to be "saved," almost like a membership card.
