Custom publisher's newsletter seeks to organize custom publishing industry, publishes list of ten largest publishers for the first time.


Phoenix-based McMurry is a custom publisher by birth and a subscription newsletter publisher since its 1998 launch of Publications Management for corporate publications managers and custom publishers. With that newsletter, McMurry is taking a number of steps to organize the burgeoning medium of custom publishing.

* It has begun The Magnum Opus Awards program, which is dedicated to honoring custom publishing excellence.

* And now a team of researchers at Publications Management has identified the 50 highest-circulation custom publications in the United States, marking the first time in history that the growth of this medium has been quantified in this manner.

"Six years ago we began collecting and monitoring industry data," said Chris McMurry, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of the company. Intuitively we have known all along that custom publications are a pervasive media form. The data, and the new Top 50 list, are helping quantify an industry that is omnipresent, but prior to our work was remarkably unmeasured."

Top ten custom publications

The top four spots on the list are dominated by two organizations, the Jehovah's Witnesses and AARP AARP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan national organization dedicated to "enriching the experience of aging"; membership is open to people age 50 or older. Founded in 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus as American Association of Retired Persons, AARP now has over 30 million . The Top 10 Branded Magazines, which often compete directly with subscription newsletters (see sidebar), are:

1. The Watchtower, circulation 614,832,000,

2. Awake!, 540,720,000,

3. AARP Bulletin, 238,339,2777,

4. AARP The Magazine, 132,313,968,

5. Food and Family, 60,000,000,

6. The Costco Connection, 49,318,620,

7. ESPN The Magazine ESPN The Magazine is a bi-weekly sports magazine published by the ESPN sports network in New Britain, CT in the United States. The first issue was published on March 11, 1998. , 45,752,122,

8. Focus on the Family, 31,200,000,

9. The American Legion Magazine, 31,071,588, and

10. Martha Stewart Living Martha Stewart Living is a magazine and a television show featuring entertaining and home decorating guru Martha Stewart. Both the magazine and the television program focus on the domestic arts. , 28,379,040.

McMurry's own custom publications include magazines for Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run  and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company
