Custom mix increases paced by specialties.

The strong showing by the auto industry in 1994 was reflected in Rubber World's annual survey of custom mixers. Almost two-thirds of the respondents said business increased last year and most said it was automotive related. The increase in business was handled primarily with existing capacity, as the custom mixers indicated only a slight increase in total capacity compared to 1993. Capacity for 1994 was estimated at 3.9 billion pounds, up from 3.8 billion the previous year. Nearly 12% of the respondents said they planned to increase capacity in 1995.

Most of the increases of 1994 were in the specialty elastomers, primarily silicone. American Silicone, Depco, Dow Corning STI, Gayson SDI, Laur Silicone and Silmix indicated they went through capacity increases last year and they all primarily mix silicone. Dow STI said spiraling demand for the material necessitated adding five pieces of mixing and extrusion equipment at its midwest plant that boosted mixing capacity by 30% and doubled its finishing output. The company also said that additional hiring and extensive overtime at its Monroe, CT site would double capacity there.

American Silicone increased annual capacity by 2.5 million pounds; Gayson claimed a 100% increase in capacity as it moved from New Jersey to Barberton, OH; Silmix increased capacity by 200%: while Depco and Laur did not disclose the extent of their capacity additions.

Other capacity expansions that occurred in 1994: Beebe Rubber added five million pounds of toner mixing capacity; Eagle Elastomer opened a two million pound capacity facility for fluoroelastomers in Clearfield, UT; J-Von increased capacity by 15 million pounds primarily for mixing of styrenic block copolymers and TPEs; Kardoes Rubber installed a new mixer; and Valley Rubber Mixing doubled capacity with the addition of an 84" color mill and an internal mixer.

Companies indicating capacity increases for this year are: Dyna-Mix is installing a F270 mixer in Grafton, WV and one at its Tyler, TX plant; Gayson SDI said it was going to expand into organic colors; J-Von's capacity would increase five million pounds by upgrading its material handling and downstream equipment; Associated Rubber, Chardon Rubber, Laur Silicone, Martin Rubber and Teknor Apex indicated expansions would take place; while Alloy Polymers, Bata Rubber and Blair Rubber said they were considering expansions during the year.
