Curing the 'cancer" of horizontal violence.

I RECENTLY attended the emergency and flight nurses' conference in Christchurch Christchurch, city and district, England
Christchurch, city (1991 pop. 32,854) and district, Dorset, S central England, on Christchurch Bay at the confluence of the Avon and Stour rivers.
where I heard Christchurch Hospital emergency department clinical charge nurse Paul Paul, 1901–64, king of the Hellenes (1947–64), brother and successor of George II. He married (1938) Princess Frederika of Brunswick. During Paul's reign Greece followed a pro-Western policy, and the Cyprus question was temporarily resolved.  O'Donovan

discuss the "cancer" of horizontal violence. I am concerned about the lack of research being done into this topic.

Horizontal violence is the term used to describe "when peers behave destructively toward each other". This is not a new phenomenon as many health professionals are aware, but what exactly are we doing to solve the situation? Nurses are defined as caring people. Then why, I ask myself, are we not caring for each other? Why are we being bullies? We are a powerful group of health professionals, with women making up 95 percent of nurses. But we are certainly not acting professionally. What or who is making us behave this way? Why are we unfriendly to other areas in our hospital? I work in a hospital with over 1000 nursing staff and I am not aware of any area that interacts socially or for team-building purposes. Are we not all members of the same team, with one common interest--the patients?

Why are we cold and unfriendly to agency or bureau nursing staff? Why do we not welcome and thank them when they come and work in our area? Are they not coming to make our workplace a safer and more desirable workplace? Is it difficult to show them around and show them where to leave their property? Are we not all working for the same thing? Why are we nurses if we can only care for a small group of people? Why do student nurses have such difficult clinical experiences? These people are our profession's future. Weren't were·n't

we all students once? Do we think we are too superior to share our knowledge?

The conference I attended brought together emergency and flight nurses in a joint conference for the first time. I am sure everyone there would agree it was a great success.

We can work together and do it better and then maybe nurse retention wouldn't would·n't
