About Kids Helping Kids -- Leila and Charlotte's 2nd Annual Soccer Tournament for CureDuchenne (May 21, 2006)

The weather was gloomy, but this didn't dampen the success of Leila and Charlotte's 2nd Annual Soccer Tournament for CureDuchenne. Over 100 kids and their families joined them for a fun day of 3-on-3 soccer, coordinated by MK Soccer Club at the Sage Hill School Sage Hill School was founded in 1999, the first year it filed a Form 990 with the IRS. According to its 2000 Private School Affidavit filed with the state of California, it opened in September of 2000 with 35 Sophomores and 115 Freshmen.  in Newport Coast, California. Leila Pozin (14), a student at The Pegasus School in Huntington Beach, and Charlotte Gadbois (12), a student at Harbor Day School in Corona del Mar, showed their community what they could do to help others. Their goal was to help save boys in their own neighborhood who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. They wanted to raise enough from their event to help two other teens, the "Whiz Kids," Lalith Polepeddi and Mike Polmear, in their research efforts to find a potential treatment for DMD. They did!

"CureDuchenne will fund a portion of Lalith and Mike's lab expenses through the summer with the proceeds made from Leila and Charlotte's event," said Debra Miller, founder of CureDuchenne and mother of a Duchenne boy. "These girls did an awesome job of bringing the community together to help our son and the thousands of boys worldwide who have this deadly disorder. Both sets of these young people started by simply wanting to help others, but it's their passion that's driven them to make a difference. We hope their efforts will encourage other kids to challenge the norm and think outside the box. You never know where that next great discovery will come from or who will fund it. Here we have kids helping kids, to help other kids. What can be more encouraging than that?

"CureDuchenne will also help Lalith and Mike with a fundraising concert, featuring Catchpenny catch·pen·ny

They are testing the effect of various membrane sealants on the leaky dystrophin-deficient membranes of Duchenne muscular dystrophy cells. The purpose of their project is to develop an effective treatment that will strengthen the cell membranes. "This is not a cure, and the research is very preliminary, but it is a direction that has not been explored before," said Dr. Brian Tseng, a muscular dystrophy muscular dystrophy (dĭs`trōfē), any of several inherited diseases characterized by progressive wasting of the skeletal muscles. "After hearing about this research, we immediately discussed this new path with our scientific advisor, Dr. Jeffrey Chamberlain, noted gene therapy researcher from the University of Washington.
