A CURE for cancer has been named as the number one wish for the new millennium in a nationwide poll.

Study of lung patients

The findings were revealed in an analysis of hospital and GP case notes for 3,752 lung cancer patients in Scotland which has the highest incidence of lung cancer in the world.

The survey showed that sufferers who visited chest physicians were more likely to have an investigation of a tissue sample and receive active treatment such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

According to the survey, 14 per cent of patients received surgery after seeing a specialist compared with nine per cent who did not see an expert.

Four in 10 received radiotherapy after seeing the chest specialist compared with three in 10 who did not.

Dr Ronald Fergusson, the consultant lung physician at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh who carried out the research, said: "This is due to patients getting more active treatment than those patients who see other types of doctors such as general physicians and geriatricians.
