Cupid Conquers the Cubicle: 55% of Employers Aware of Current Office Romances.

Business Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--February 10, 2000

As Valentines Day approaches, Cupid's arrows are finding their way into the workplace. A recent survey conducted by Vault.com, the Workplace Network(TM), reports that most employers are currently aware of at least one office romance An office romance, work romance, or corporate affair is a romance that occurs between two people who work together in the same office, work location, or business. It tends to breach nonfraternization policies and is a foreseeable business expense.  at their company. No doubt to the relief of involved employees, the survey also found that today's employers rarely prohibit intra-office dating.

A remarkable 55% of the employers surveyed said that they were aware of current romances in the office. 46% reported one to five romances at their company, 6% knew of six to ten and 3% said they were aware of eleven or more.

Of the 1,240 employers surveyed by Vault.com, 70% said that their company has no policy forbidding office romances and over 95% reported that they had never personally taken action against an office romance.

As part of the survey, employers told Vault.com what they think of workplace relationships. Comments include:

-- &uot;It's a company-wide epidemic.&uot;

-- &uot;It's hard to tell. Some are public and acceptable and others are

quite clandestine.&uot;

-- &uot;We have many husband/wife employees in the company. I doubt they

were all hired as a couple from the outside.&uot;

-- &uot;Let's face it, if two people are in love, we do not have the

power to stop them. We allow people to be people and not just

workers.&uot;

This data comes from Vault.com's brand-new Survey on Workplace Romance, the first comprehensive survey on this largely unexamined subject.

In addition to studying workplace issues, Vault.com is well-known for its award-winning &uot;insider&uot; company and industry profiles on companies such as MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices.
