Cummins Selected for Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) has been recognized for its economic, environmental and social leadership by Dow Jones, which added the Company to its Sustainability World Index for 2005. This index represents the top 10 percent of the world's largest 2,500 companies in these corporate sustainability metrics.

The updated index based on Dow Jones' annual review becomes effective with the opening of the equity markets on Sept. 19.

Cummins is one of the 44 global companies now included in the World Index's industrial goods and services sector and only one of two U.S. companies added to that particular sector this year. In its annual review, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) analyzes companies in three categories - economic, environment and social - each counting for one-third of a company's total score.

Issues considered include corporate governance, codes of conduct, environmental policy and procedures and the scope of their application, environmental management systems, corporate citizenship and philanthropy, labor practices and employee development.

Dow Jones enlists the help of SAM Research in compiling its indices. Invitations to participate in the Index are sent to 2,500 companies worldwide; SAM Research analyzed approximately 1,000 companies through a combination of company-supplied and public information. The selection of index components follows a prescribed rules-based process and analysis is verified by an external auditor.

According to SAM Research, the 2005 assessment revealed a number of sustainability developments in the corporate word, including:

--Sustainability is continuing its move from corporate strategy and operations into product and service offerings.

--Sustainability indicators are increasingly linked to financial results.

--Transparency and accountability along the whole supply chain are increasingly visible through policies and control mechanisms.

--Corporations widely recognize and acknowledge the importance of employee development for their success.
