Cummins Inc. Celebrates 5000th QST30 Engine.

Today Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CUM) marked the production of the 5000th QST30 engine produced in Seymour, IN, with a huge celebration. The event, attended by local, state, and international dignitaries, celebrated the success of a joint venture with Komatsu that spans the globe for design, production, distribution, and service.

Cummins presented the 5000th engine to representatives from the Russian Ministry of Rail, which has been one of the largest users of the QST30 engine. Mr. Viacheslav Dubrovin, the Director General of the Remputmash facility in Russia, and Ms. Elena Gavrilina, a Senior Specialist from the Russian Ministry of Railway Transportation were delighted to be a part of the occasion. Other guests included representatives for the Indiana and United States Departments of Commerce, as well as local government leaders.

In 1994 Cummins began working with the Kaluga factory of the Russian Ministry of Rail to provide engines to power a variety of the railroad maintenance equipment produced at the Kaluga factory, "Remputmash". The QST30 engines power the UTM2M Power Module, which, in turn, powers the SCh-601 Ballast Cleaner. Ballast cleaners are huge, complex machines which ride on the rails and simultaneously remove, clean and replace the ballast (the bed of small rocks upon which the railroad ties/sleepers are supported). This allows the ballast to drain efficiently and minimizes rail misalignment due to settling, freeze heaving, etc.

The QST30 is applied in a wide variety of large industrial and power generation equipment up to 1050hp. A very high percentage of these engines are exported, either directly as "loose engines" or in US produced equipment.

The basic design of the QST30 engine was developed by Komatsu in Japan. The design was further developed to incorporate Cummins U.S. technology, and the engine manufacturing is done in our joint venture in Seymour, Indiana using components sourced from many different places in the world. The completed engines are then shipped to Cummins Power Generation in Kent, England, where they are built into generator sets using Newage (another Cummins subsidiary) alternators. The generator sets are then shipped to Remputmash in Kaluga, Russia where they are built into the UTM2M Power Modules which are self-contained/powered railcars which couple to the SCh-601 Ballast Cleaner to provide electricity for the electric motors which operate the Ballast Cleaner. These machines then operate on the entire length of the Russian railway system from Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea in the west, to Vladivostok and Sakhalin Island in the east.... almost back to Japan!
