COLUMBUS, Ind. . . . Cummins Engine Co. Inc. (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :CUM) today reported first-quarter 1997 net earnings of $41 million, or $1.06 per share, on sales of $1.3 billion. Profit-before tax of $56 million was 12 percent higher than the $50 million reported in the fourth quarter of 1996. Sales were $1.36 billion in the fourth quarter of 1996.
