Cummins Engine Co. Inc. (NYSE NYSE

:CUM) today reported second-quarter 1997 net earnings of $53 million, or $1.39 per share, on record sales of $1.4 billion. This is a 20-percent improvement over second- quarter 1996 net earnings of $44 million, or $1.10 per share, on sales of $1.3 billion, and is a 26-percent improvement in earnings per share. The company earlier had indicated it expected second-quarter earnings to be higher than the $41 million reported in the first quarter.

For the first half of 1997, Cummins reported net earnings of $94 million, or $2.45 per share, on sales of $2.7 billion. For the same period of 1996, the company's net earnings were $93 million, or $2.31 per share, on sales of $2.6 billion.

Sales of $331 million to the heavy-duty truck market were 7 percent higher than the second quarter of 1996, due primarily to increased shipments in international markets. "To better serve this market, we announced yesterday a completely new engine with the first electronic dual overhead cam in automotive history, featuring 600 hp. with improved torque," said Tim Solso, president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)
