FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 2002

Construction recently broke ground for the Broward County Aviation Department's $140 million Consolidated Rental Car Facility, the largest Construction Management at Risk project in the history of the county, located at the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Cummings-Centex Rooney (a joint venture of two of South Florida's most respected names in construction) will serve as the Construction Manager.

"We look forward to building another quality, on-time project for the airport. We are honored to be a part of building Broward's future," said William R. Derrer, President of James A. Cummings, Inc. "Partnering with Broward County to take this first step of the Vision 2020 plan has generated a lot of excitement within the Cummings-Centex Rooney team. This landmark parking garage will serve as a touchstone for future airport services and operations, and as a prestigious accomplishment for our team," remarked Gary Glenewinkel, Executive Vice President and COO of Centex Rooney Construction Company, Inc.

This new garage will consolidate all rental car operations in a single location and provide additional public parking. The cast-in-place structure will cover 3.5 million square feet over its seven levels. The exterior facade will feature a combination of pre-cast panels and curtain walls. Architects Spillis Candela DMJM designed the garage to accommodate three additional parking floors on the roof. Car rental companies will use the 150,000 square-foot shell office space, as well as a complete fuel system with 130 fuel dispensers and 150,000 gallons of fuel storage capacity. To facilitate pedestrian traffic, the garage will offer fourteen elevators and six sets of escalators.

Cummings-Centex Rooney will break ground this month to have the garage operable by 2005. "We have a detailed knowledge of this airport and its activities in addition to a strong relationship with the Aviation Department, the program manager, and the architect. All these factors add up to our ability to build a safe project with minimal disruptions," stated Geoff Bunnell, Project Executive for the joint venture.

The Broward County Aviation Department selected Cummings-Centex Rooney to build the Consolidated Car Rental Facility in part due to the success of the Hibiscus Infield Parking Garage. This Cummings-Centex Rooney project, completed in 1999, finished two months ahead of schedule and more than $1 million under budget. Project Manager Rob Gillette observed that: "With our past experience and established relationships, Cummings-Centex Rooney will not have the restrictions of a learning curve on this project. Our effectiveness for Broward County starts day one."

Based in Fort Lauderdale since its inception in 1981, James A. Cummings, Inc. has become one of South Florida's largest construction managers and design builders, winning awards for its quality and craftsmanship. Its reputation stems from its commitment to build high quality projects with a personal commitment to owner satisfaction.
