Cumberland reports final drill results on Meliadine East Project.

VANCOUVER, BC--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 1995--CUMBERLAND RESOURCES (VSE:CBD) CUMBERLAND RESOURCES LTD. (CBD-VSE) and Comaplex Minerals Corp. (CMF-T) are pleased to announce the results of the summer drill program on the Companies' Meliadine Gold Project, a 50-50 joint venture between Cumberland and Comaplex.

The Meliadine Property is favourably located on the west coast of Hudson Bay, 20 miles north of Rankin Inlet, Northwest Territories. The property covers a 40 mile long east-west trending gold belt. In June of 1995, Cumberland and Comaplex announced an agreement with WMC International Ltd. on the western half of the Meliadine property. WMC International is presently concluding a 23,000 foot diamond drill program on the western half of the property. Results from WMC's program are expected by late September. The Cumberland-Comaplex joint venture continued exploration on the eastern portion of the property.

The program consisted of 19,700 feet of diamond drilling in 39 holes. The objectives of the program were to further define and expand the resource at the Discovery deposit (740,000 ton grading 0.29 oz. gold per ton) and to drill test other prospective targets in close proximity to Discovery. The Discovery deposit is part of a four mile long gold prospect, collectively referred to as the Discovery Prospect, and includes the following seven targets; Discovery, Capricorn, Pisces, Gemini, Aquarius, Sinuk and Orion.

At Discovery, additional holes tested the mineralized zones to a depth of up to 1200 feet. The drilling indicated that the mineralization is very consistent vertically and remains open to depth. A revised resource calculation will be completed shortly.

This year's program discovered a series of parallel zones collectively referred to as the Capricorn target, located 1300 feet west of the Discovery Deposit. A series of drill holes within this zone indicates the gold mineralization and alteration is increasing with depth. Drillhole 95-97 in the zone intersected 0.40 oz. Au/ton over 6.6 ft. Hole 95-116, located 75 feet vertically below 95-97 intersected 0.72 oz. Au/ton over 12.5 ft.

Drilling on the Pisces target, 300 feet east of Discovery, intersected several zones of significant gold mineralization. Alteration in the zone is intense and future drillholes targeted at deeper levels are being considered.

Elsewhere on the property, drilling continued to intersect encouraging gold values in the Capricorn 2, 3 and 4 zones and the Aquarius target (see attached table). These holes confirm that continued diamond drilling is warranted across the entire 4 mile length of the Discovery Prospect area.

Management is extremely pleased with the results from the program. The Discovery Deposit continues to advance toward economic grade and tonnage thresholds. As well, exciting new zones of gold mineralization have been intersected requiring follow-up testing. Supplies and material are being shipped for another significant drill program in 1996.

Cumberland Resources is a Canadian mineral company with two emerging gold projects, Meliadine (50 percent) and Meadowbank (60 percent) located in the Northwest Territories.
