CBD - component based development ) Cumberland Resources Ltd. reports on continuing activities on its Parker Lake Project, centered 60 miles west of Rankin Inlet, N.W.T. The Parker Lake Project is a Joint Venture between Cumberland (50 percent), Comaplex Minerals Corp. (25 percent) and Manson Creek Resources Ltd. (25 percent). Results from the most recent series of drill holes on the Suluk Zone (copper-nickel-cobalt) and Sandhill A sandhill is an ecological community type found in many parts of the world. Sandhills in the coastal plain of North America This xeric fire-maintained ecosystem features very short fire return intervals, one to five years. Zone (copper-zinc) have recently been received and compiled. Additional diamond drilling Diamond Drilling is a highly specialized industry used for mineral exploration around the world. Most commonly using wireline and core bits with diamond encrusted matrix. To drill holes to max depths of twelve thousand feet, for the recovery of core used in verifying mineral (2000 meters) is planned for mid to late August. SULUK (COPPER-NICKEL-COBALT) ZONE Additional drilling, in four drill holes, both along strike and at depth on the Suluk Zone returned similar results to those announced earlier this summer. While these results are considered highly encouraging for continuing exploration, intersections of economic width were not encountered. The Company continues to explore a large, high priority target area located approximately 800 meters west of the Suluk Zone. A deep penetrating gravity survey has recently been completed over these prospective rocks (called layered gabbros) which locally yield geochemically anomalous levels of copper and nickel. The gravity survey has outlined a moderate to strong anomaly (1.8 milligals) over an area of 400 by 400 meters within the gabbro gabbro: see basalt. gabbro Any of several medium- or coarse-grained rocks that consist primarily of plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene. Gabbros are found widely on the Earth and on the Moon. . Surface rock exposures do not adequately explain this underlying anomaly. Another phase of diamond drilling, combined with down-hole (EM) geophysical surveying, is planned for mid to late August and is designed to evaluate this gravity anomaly A gravity anomaly is the difference between the observed gravity and a value predicted from a model. Geodesy and geophysics In geodesy and geophysics, the usual model is the surface of a global spheroid (ellipsoid of Hayford or WGS84) by rather simple formulae (2 functions of . Considering the extreme size of the horizon (over 16 kilometers) and the fact that these are the first drill holes on the zone the Company is encouraged by these first drilling results. Further drilling is planned for mid to late August. DIAMONDS Extensive and systematic till sampling over a 150 square kilometer area roughly defined by the three diamondiferous occurrences identified in 1994 and 1995 is also underway on the project. This program, led by world renowned experts from the Russian Diamond Institute, is designed to identify potentially larger diamond bearing structures on the property. Results from this program are expected in the fourth quarter. CUMBERLAND RESOURCES LTD. Kerry Curtis, B.Sc., P.Geo. Vice-President, Corporate Development CONTACT: Cumberland Resources Ltd.
