Culture banners bust-up.


LIVERPOOL'S ability to be European Capital of Culture was questioned yesterday when a council chief called for donations to buy flags and banners.

Lib Dem LIB DEM Liberal Democrat(s) (UK political party)  leader Warren Bradley Warren Bradley may be:
  • Warren Bradley (footballer), Manchester United and England player
  • Warren Bradley (politician), leader of Liverpool City Council
 called on small businesses to pitch in pounds 100 each to help pay for next year's pounds 96million party.

But when traders called the Liverpool Culture Company, the event's organisers, the firm knew nothing about the scheme.

The farce has prompted Labour leader Coun Joe Anderson

Joe Anderson (born c. 1981) is a British actor.

He attented Richmond upon Thames College and later the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
 to quit the city's Culture Board in disgust. He said: "It's ridiculous to be trotting out appeals for flags and bunting. It's making the city a laughing stock."

But Coun Bradley said last night: "The figure of pounds 100 was just an example. I was not saying such a scheme has been set up."
