Culture and Dental Health Among African Immigrant School-Aged Children in the United States.
CULTURE AND DENTAL HEALTH AMONG AFRICAN IMMIGRANT SCHOOL-AGED
CHILDREN IN THE UNITED STATES. Cecilia S. Obeng. Health Education
Journal, Vol. 107, No. 4 (2007): 343-350. This paper examines African
immigrant parents' views on dental decay and whether such views
affect their decision to obtain dental insurance for their children. The
paper also examines the cultural underpinnings of the immigrants'
oral health care practices. The results indicate that a large number of
African immigrant school-age children are denied dental health as a
result of a combination of cultural perceptions about dental health,
parental ignorance about dental health, parents' perception of
dental health practice in the United States, and parents' weak
financial standing.
