Cultural rainbow: embracing every hue.

Ericka Dunlap Ericka Dunlap (born February 17, 1981) was Miss America 2004, and was the first African American woman to be crowned Miss Florida. A native of Orlando, Dunlap attended the University of Central Florida and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority when she was crowned Miss , Miss America Miss America

When she and her mother arrived at the all-White event, a receptionist told them coldly, "The family reunion Often an annual event, a family reunion takes place on a specified day each year for the purpose of keeping an extended family closer together. Insulted by the fact that the greeter refused to believe that they were there for the clogging competition and unwilling to retreat, Ericka's mom took her by the hand and together they went off in search of the event on their own. When Ericka, shaken by the situation, hesitated to perform, her mom looked her in the eye and said, "You go out there and do it." And she did.

Miss America 2004 thinks her peers just didn't quite know what to make of a Black girl who loved country music and fully expected to be crowned in front of an international audience.

"When I was in high school, I was very well known, so I guess you could say I was popular from that standpoint," Ericka confides. "But there were plenty of times that I was left out. I didn't have a lot of close friends. That was OK, though. I'm a Christian, so I learned to pray and get deeper spiritually, which helped me through those times." Understanding her value in the eyes of her Savior gave Ericka a vital sense of purpose.

Her platform is "cultural diversity and inclusiveness." Ericka feels that she didn't choose her message; her message chose her. "I want to stress that allowing yourself to be open to learning about other people is so important."

Ericka's experiences among her own race uncovered some interesting discoveries. "I learned there is prejudice even within the African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  community," she admits, "based on your skin shade, where you come from, and if you are of Caribbean descent. So my point is, we need to be open to embracing everyone, not just people who are radically different. I firmly believe that every person has something special about him or her, and it's our responsibility to acknowledge each person, and to reach out to people around us."

Where Do You Stand?

Examining our attitudes toward those unlike ourselves is essential in today's rapidly shifting ethnic landscape. The Census Bureau Noun 1.  reports that since 1990, we've experienced a 44 percent increase of people living in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  who were born in other countries. One in five residents of this country is foreign-born or first generation. The necessity of developing our "inclusiveness skills" will increase as we encounter various languages, cultures, and religions in our places of work, neighborhoods, schools, and churches.

Education plays a key role. The apostle apostle (əpŏs`əl) [Gr.,=envoy], one of the prime missionaries of Christianity. The apostles of the first rank are saints Peter, Andrew, James (the Greater), John, Thomas, James (the Less), Jude (or Thaddaeus), Philip, Bartholomew,  Paul in Hebrews 10:24 states: "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." Most of us don't instinctively reach out. We need to give some thought as to how we can make sincere efforts and teach our children to do likewise.

Ericka offers more suggestions. "It's helpful to avoid cliques," she says. "And remember that even though people seem really different, there are usually more similarities than you think, so don't be afraid. The truth is, you probably won't be friends with everyone, but even creating a friendly environment is so important. It can mean a lot just to share warm smiles."

Being a law student, Ericka reminds us that it's impossible to legislate To enact laws or pass resolutions by the lawmaking process, in contrast to law that is derived from principles espoused by courts in decisions.  tolerance. It's a matter of the heart and, according to according to

 Be True

Galatians 5:13 reads: "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love." Although we serve others, we shouldn't abuse our consciences and sin in order to be acceptable to unbelievers.

Our "culture" as Christians needs to come first. Defining truth as presented in the Bible is more important than receiving praise from men. In fact, if we truly embrace diversity, only then will we model the gospel correctly. "Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the Gospel of Christ" (2 Corinthians 9:13). It's our love for people, not acceptance of things contrary to the Word, that draws them to the Lord.

Prejudice Close to Home

Like Ericka, we may encounter people different from us sitting beside us in the pew at church. When we face these different cultures, our job is to focus on the Christ being preached by our words and actions. Do we willingly, eagerly "slander slander: see libel and slander.

What kind of culture are we creating in our homes? Colossians 2:8 advises, "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ." Feeding our minds with worldly culture in the form of immoral books, television shows, and motion pictures isn't embracing diversity. It's simply opening up ourselves to sin.

others in our cross-cultural circle; breaching ethnic barriers as we strive to introduce others to Christ. Christians should be stationed on the front lines when it comes to spreading peace among the nations. We are all conduits of God's love. He has commissioned us to live and work deep within His cultural rainbow, savoring every exchange, accepting every difference, embracing every hue.

Include the following questions in your next family discussion:

Member of a Jewish religious party in Palestine that emerged c. 160 BC in opposition to the Sadducees. The Pharisees held that the Jewish oral tradition was as valid as the Torah.
, a member of a religious sect who murdered Christians. Yet we think of him as one of the greatest heroes of our faith. Knowing Paul's background, do you believe that members of other religions such as Muslims, Catholics, or Buddhists can come to experience salvation?

2. During Paul's journeys, he ministered to many churches rich in cultural diversity. What do you think he had to say about God's love for all people? Find some examples in his writings.

Reach Out to a Family That Doesn't Look Like You

Chances are the family at church or in the neighborhood who's the most ethnically unique isn't on anyone's short list for dinner invites. Reach out to them. Spend time getting to know them. Since we often view the world from our own circle of friends, this is a great way to broaden our understanding of other cultures. Ponder this question: What do you think they might be curious to learn about you?

Have Fun ... the Way Other People Do

One of the best ways to appreciate people of other cultures is to experience how they enjoy life. Pick a group and do a little research on how they play games or celebrate holidays. Then share your findings. You may be surprised at how much they resemble you and your family. As a fun field trip, take the kids to an ethnic restaurant. Ask questions about the dishes and sample something unique. Listen to ethnic music or visit a museum in search of art and information about another culture.
