"It can be very hard on trucks and batteries in this type of environment but they have not let us down," said Ian Barton, logistics manager for Culina Logistics. "We are very happy with the service we get from Hawker." They have been available in the United Kingdom and many other industrialised countries since the 1960s. and drink manufacturers supplying products throughout the UK since 1993. The company operates three of the most hi-tech temperature controlled distribution centres in the country. Its network provides 41,340m2 (445,000 sq ft) of chilled storage with over 44,000 pallet spaces and over 3,000 pick locations. When the company opened its latest 14,000 pallet capacity facility at Prime Point, Staffordshire it wanted to ensure that once again the most advanced solutions were adopted for its evolving business requirements. The company selected a fleet of electric powered lift A powered lift (also written powered-lift) is a type of aircraft that can take off and land vertically but functions differently than a helicopter in horizontal flight. and warehouse trucks from Linde--which supplies trucks to all its sites--comprising 13 X range reach trucks, 10 T20 powered pallet transporters, 50 T16 powered pallet transporters, two M25 double-fork-length powered pallet transporters and five counterbalance trucks. The choice of batteries was equally important because the chilled environment and heavy duty cycles in this type of warehouse place the heaviest possible demands on the power source. Culina wanted batteries that combined excellent performance with reliability and predictable cost of ownership over their expected lifetime. The company also required that the charge and change area would take up the smallest possible floorspace and eliminate manual handling to promote best practice and compliance with health and safety guidelines guidelines, n.pl a set of standards, criteria, or specifications to be used or followed in the performance of certain tasks. . The lift truck supplier recommended Hawker EnerSys as a potential supplier with experience in this type of application. "We wanted to keep the area tidy and compact," said Barton. "And eliminating unnecessary truck movements in the charging area minimises the risk of accidents." Hawker assessed the selected lift trucks and their anticipated duty cycles including the amount of lifting and travelling they were expected to do and proposed a solution based around its high performance Perfect Plus which offers extended work cycles between charges. The batteries are charged by Hawker Powertech high frequency (HF) chargers, which offer outstanding energy efficiency--as much as 20 percent higher than traditional 50 Hz chargers. Powertech automatically detects the battery's level of discharge and will supply only the amount of power needed--and no more--to restore full charge. This means less mains power is required to charge a battery, leading to significant savings in electricity costs. The Powertech charger CHARGER, Scotch law. It will automatically accommodate batteries of different capacities, and is easily programmable for all battery technologies. The battery and lift truck suppliers worked together to design and install the charge and change area in line with Culina's requirements. Each lift truck was supplied with a spare battery, enabling Culina to adopt a simple twinned management process with a depleted de·plete tr.v. de·plet·ed, de·plet·ing, de·pletes To decrease the fullness of; use up or empty out. Each of the three principal truck types used in the warehouse has a different sized battery and this means each must be handled in a different way. With the smallest batteries, used on the T16 powered pallet transporters, the truck approaches its charging position and the depleted battery is lifted out. The fully charged unit is lifted back in using a small gantry crane Both overhead travelling cranes and gantry cranes are types of crane which lift objects by a hoist which is fitted in a trolley and can move horizontally on a rail or pair of rails fitted under a beam. supplied as part of the installation. The middle sized batteries used on the T20 trucks are handled using a special trolley trolley: see streetcar. which is brought to the truck so that the batteries can be switched using a simple roll-off, roll-on process. The largest batteries from the X range reach trucks are handled in a similar way with a specially adapted powered pallet transporter. This incorporates a magnetic arm to push and pull the batteries in and out of position to avoid the need for manual handling. Hawker devised special stands at the charging point to support the batteries slightly higher off the ground than normal so that the modified pallet transporter can approach and handle them. Handling batteries like this eliminates the need for manual handling while providing an effective yet simple solution for each size. The footprint The amount of geographic space covered by an object.
