Cubist Pharmaceuticals Pays in Full $29 Million of Convertible Bond Debt.


LEXINGTON, Mass. -- Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: CBST CBST Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology

) today announced that on December 13, 2004, the company repaid the outstanding principle and interest on its 8 1/2% senior convertible notes, which were due in September 2005, to John Hancock Life Insurance Company. The total payment was $30.4 million, which was composed of principle and accrued interest Accrued Interest

The interest that has accumulated on a bond since the last interest payment up to but not including the settlement date.

There are two methods for calculating accrued interest:
1) 360-day year method, used for corporate and municipal bonds.

A fee a borrower pays a lender when the borrower repays a loan before its scheduled time of maturity.
 of $0.9 million. The early redemption of the notes will save Cubist approximately $1.7 million in future interest payments. As a result of the early payment of debt, Cubist also accelerated deferred financing costs related to the senior convertible notes of $0.2 million to interest expense.
